The Philadelphia Chapter of the Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association continued to make strides by hosting another successful membership meeting and participating in the Long Term Quality Alliance annual meeting.  On Friday 25, Brenda Nachtway, National Membership Director for the Direct Care Alliance, accompanied PADCWA members Peg Ankney, Margaret Beringer and myself to Washington, DC, where we attended the Inaugural Annual Meeting of the Long-Term Quality Alliance.  This event was held at the National Press Club where we met with Leonila Vega, Executive Director of the DCA.  Throughout the day we listened to industry and government leaders talk about issues that affect direct care workers and those in our care.

Mary Naylor of the University of Pennsylvania gave the welcome address and talked  about quality measurement, tangible improvements in care, and advancing policies that lead to improved care, among other important issues.  Kathy Greenlee, Assistant Secretary for Aging, focused on government policy, budgetary provisions and outlined features of the CLASS Act.  Topics covered by other speakers included the Affordable Care Act, dual eligibles, quality measurement, outreach and public awareness.

PA Supreme Court Mandates Overtime Pay for Home Health Aides

Connie Kreider

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently ruled that home health aides must get paid overtime!  This is an exciting victory that will change change the lives of many Pennsylvania direct care workers in home health settings.  So many direct care workers struggle to keep two or more jobs just to meet their monthly expenses.  Many do not have affordable health care and are providing care to not only their consumers, but to their own children and elderly parents as well.

The ruling in Pennsylvania is a blessing, and gives hope to all direct care workers across the country.  The heart of a direct care worker is full of compassion for providing the best care possible, and this ruling means better quality jobs for them and better quality care for those they serve. This ruling will change the future for all home health aides in Pennsylvania and provide them with adequate compensation for their profession. I hope that PA will set an example for other states to do the same. Continue reading »

Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association Launches Philly Chapter

Posted by on November 22nd, 2010 at 12:16 pm | No Comments »

On October 21, the Philadelphia chapter of the Pennsylvania Direct Care Worker Association  held its roll-out meeting in Center City Philadelphia. After months of planning and working together, I am so proud of us for making it happen!  We are especially grateful for the support and attendance by Roy Gedat of the Direct Care Alliance, Brenda Nachtway of the PADCWA and the Valentine Foundation – who has made this all possible. And I have to mention the absolutely divine cheese pie that was prepared by Peg Ankney along with other light refreshments.

Poems by Direct Care Workers: My Aunt’s Repeat Story About My Mother

Posted by on November 1st, 2010 at 10:55 am | No Comments »

On the surface, this poem has nothing to do with work. But my mother would have been a good direct care worker. She would have known that any system of care needs to include everyone.

My Aunt’s Repeat Story About My Mother

Ruth Tiernan once took thirteen kids
in one car swimming at Cobbet’s Pond.
It was a hot day in Nashua, New Hampshire,
July, nineteen-fifty. She was sixteen
and had just gotten her driver’s license.
Grandpa Tiernan had just bought the family’s first car,
a 1939 Plymouth with the stick on the floor,
and he let her take it, which surprises me,
for I remember him an old man, always mad
at us kids for tromping up the stairs.
But they remember him giving them all he could.

My mother hollered, anyone want to go swimming
get your bathing suit!

and whoosh there were eleven kids at the car
in less than a minute. Let me tell you it’s tough
when you’re sitting three deep in the back seat
,
my Aunt Clara says.

Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association to Launch Philadelphia Chapter

Posted by on October 12th, 2010 at 1:02 pm | 1 Comment »

In July, I attended a Voices Institute training in Pennsylvania to develop my leadership skills and learn more about how to make my voice heard on local and national issues impacting my job and my consumers.  Getting involved with DCA and my state association has been a godsend, because I realized that I have the ability and talent to make a difference.  After the workshop, I joined a leadership circle – along with Clara Glenn, Margaret Beringer, Rolanda Crawley, and Soon Hong – to build a chapter of the Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association (PDCWA) in the Philadelphia region. We’ve been making progress with the help of the PDCWA and the Direct Care Alliance, and are kicking off the launch on October 21 with an event in Philadelphia! Download the flyer and email Roy Gedat at rgedat@directcarealliance.org to RSVP.

Recently, I sat down with DCA’s Leonila Vega to talk about why I got involved with my state association and DCA. Watch the interview below:

Power in Numbers: Direct care workers descend on DC

Brenda Nachtway

Last week, I joined dozens of direct care workers and others as part of the Eldercare Workforce Alliance‘s trip to Washington, DC, to advocate for initiatives and programs that would improve the direct care workforce.  I called on Sens. Bob Casey and Arlen Specter to continue supporting those of us working with elders, and shared my personal story with members of their staff.

I was nominated to participate in the trip by the Direct Care Alliance, a founding member of the Eldercare Workforce Alliance.  DCA has empowered me to try and make a difference for direct care workers.  This wasn’t my first meeting with legislative representatives, and it won’t be my last.  It made me feel powerful, in the sense that I had a voice. One voice, together with other voices, can really make a change, make a difference.

Finding the Power Within Ourselves: From the Pennsylvania Conference

Posted by on September 21st, 2010 at 1:43 pm | 1 Comment »

After the dreaming, scheduling and registering; all the e-mails and phone calls; the finding a place to meet and people to teach and share; the keeping fingers crossed that enough direct care workers could actually take a day off and attend a conference that we all badly need; the baking of cupcakes for the welcoming reception and the braving of the Philadelphia traffic to pick up speakers at the airport…after all this work and more, the Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association’s 6th annual conference took place on September 16th at the National Christian Conference Center outside of Valley Forge.

It was worth it.

It was worth it to listen to each other…the CNAs, the home health aides, the hospice workers, the group home and the day program staff…the people supporting people with dementia, developmental disabilities and mental illness. That is who we are. It’s a good group to be a part of.

I was the keynote speaker and read poems about Leo, Lorna and Louise. I’ve been a direct care worker since Jimmy Carter was president and have learned a lot from the people I support.

More Direct Care Worker Leaders Emerge in PA

Noel Mendes & Margaret Beringer at the workshop

On Saturday, July 17, the Direct Care Alliance held a Voices Institute Leadership Training Workshop in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, which I led with Brenda Nachtway. Eight direct care workers attended the workshop that included leadership self-assessment  and modules on personal power, membership recruitment and building relationships with allies. The attendees were especially inspired to hear that the Direct Care Empowerment Act was about to be introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives and they practiced visiting with allies to gain support for the bill. On completion of the workshop, five participants – Clara Glenn, Margaret Beringer, Rolanda Crawley, Soon Hong and Noel Mendes – formed a Leadership Circle and are working together to build a chapter of the Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association in the Philadelphia region. Dr. Vera Salter, Direct Care Alliance; Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA)

Yesterday, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) hosted a Senate Special Committee on Aging Hearing in Wilkes-Barre, where he announced his intention to introduce the Direct Care Workforce Empowerment Act (House version introduced last week by Rep. Linda Sanchez).

The hearing – Taking care of Mom and Dad: Why We Need a Quality Workforce to Serve Our Older Americans – addressed the growing need for quality medical personnel to take care of a growing aging population.  I was invited to deliver testimony, along with Continue reading »
