The privilege of disability. The pride of diversity. The power of us. We are together, you and I.
In this culture that creates ample opportunity for individuality, we forge a fierce allegiance and a powerful alliance. We are caregivers for each other, you and I. We tend to physical needs. We tune in to emotional states. We hone our own abilities and we honor each other’s talents. This is perfect symmetry. As we care for each other, we demonstrate a seamless partnership. This occurs through our mutual and deliberate promotion of dignity. We know that wellness is a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.
Fifty four million Americans live with disability, either an obvious disability such as multiple sclerosis or a hidden disability such as mental illness. Disability may result from a congenital condition, may be an acquired condition due to disease or illness or may occur due to an accident. Research predicts that the incidence of disability will rise as Americans live longer. The historical approach to disability and rehabilitation has been a medical/clinical model with a narrow focus on trauma and recovery. Together, you and I create a new view of disability. We focus on resilience, redirection and redefinition of disability.
We are instructive, those of us with disabilities. We represent the authentic nature of human existence, the raw reality of physical affliction. You, too, are instructive, caregivers. It is not our physical ailments or potential perils that you view. You recognize the sacred wellness of spirit and the holistic health of soul. Together we proclaim that my life, your life, and all lives are multi-dimensional and diverse.
Thank you for serving me, and for allowing me to serve you. It is my privilege to share this life with you. Thank you for helping me live with pride, with the diversity of disability. Thank you for affirming that our individual personal power and our collective social power promote precious unity.
The privilege of disability. The pride of diversity. The power of us. We are together, you and I.

Very beautiful and sage words about the power of diversity and the natural-yet very powerful-human bond that exists between direct care workers and persons that they support. It is a very close bond that highlights the best attributes of what is “human.” Compassion, generosity, caring for the well being of others and taking steps to ensure such well being. Thank you Lynne!
Wow! Lynne, thanks for the chills I got reading that, so well stated.
And thanks to both of you, Leonila and Julie. I have said often that direct care workers are “Angels on Earth.” Your work for and in providing services is essential and vital. It is truly my honor to know such fine folks. You positively impact our world!
Lynne, so true about direct care workers doing the work of the angels. The truth is the help with the instrumentalities of daily living, but what they also do is bring dignity, love, companionship, and respect to the millions of Americans every day. The love and generosity of direct care workers is a thriving and live example of what it is to show love and fellowship among people. Thank you for the lovely post.
Great article and you are an inspiration to me. THANKS!!!
Thank you Tracy. YOU inspire me, and so many. The WIDCA Conference will be excellent. I am juggling my work schedule and hope to see you tomorrow. Have fun, Influential Leader!
