Personal Care Credential to Boost Industry Professionalism

Vera Salter

I’m thrilled to announce the Direct Care Alliance’s new national credentialing program.  Thanks to a generous grant from the Ford Foundation and the support of employers, direct care workers and consumers across the country, this credential is expected to become the gold standard credential for personal care workers.

The  Direct Care Alliance launched the pilot phase of the credentialing program on March 5, in Portland, Maine.  Additional pilot tests have been administered in Tucson, Arizona, and by the Pennsylvania Direct Care Workers Association.  Workers who complete the pilot test will be among the first to receive the credential, which meets criteria outlined by the Institute for Credentialing Excellence and will be rolled out nationwide later this year. 1. Congrats, Vera! This is an exciting development in the movement to professionalize the direct care workforce. This credential should be a powerful tool in the movement to identify the skills, experience and attitude workers need to provide good care — and hopefully, in time, to link those attributes to career ladder steps and concrete benefits like higher pay.

    Vera,
Congratulation on moving the national credentialing of Personal Care Workers closer to being a standard for the whole industry. This is a very important step in helping the PCW build their career ladder and making their training portable. Providers in Wisconsin thank you for your work and are willing to help you where ever we can.

WONDERFUL, WONDERFUL, GREAT! I am so glad this happen. I have a CNA Nursing School in Calhoun, GA and was hoping something good would come for all the Direct Care Workers.
They more than deserve it. They give their hearts and more to the families the work for.
I would love to be a pilot test credentaling program in Georgia.
Thank you for all you hard work.
